Research

For this music video, my group and I have decided to go through various different playlists to find songs at least two of us were familiar with. When we eventually found one, the remaining group member that wasn't familiar with it to listen to the song with the lyrics to grasp a better understanding of the meaning. Eventually, we decided to choose the song Freaks by Jordan Clarke, a pop song.

During our research we realized that the song did not have a music video, so we decided to get more information through other music videos with similar feelings. Since Freaks is a sad pop song, we searched up other sad songs and found the following:

  • They use dark color schemes to represent gloomy and depressing feelings.
  • Usually shot in night since it gives a darker mood. Daylight usually represents happy and lighter moods.
  • Use some sort of props (i.e. masks, clothes) that look unusual to stand out amongst the crowds.
  • Some videos had flashing lights to signify chaos
  • Symbolism on how everyone is different and to not be afraid of being yourself

Conventions and Codes:

1. To provide a deep meaning, sad music videos tend to use dark settings or dark colors to signify certain moods.

2. Flashbacks are common within sad music videos and are usually done under a white-ish light and is inserted between a scene that utilizes a cutaway shot.

3. They also use props that correlate with a specific lyric (i.e. showing a flame when the song has the word 'shine'.)
