Planning: Title Design

Image
In the first scene where it dives right into the running scene, the center of the screen will display the studio name: “Pink Studio Presents…” When it cuts to black, it will display the production company: “TMK Corp.” The actor names will follow in transitions that make it seem rushed to fit the dramatic setting. The actors working in this opening sequence include Kennedy Newsome, Madelyn Cannon, and Tasmia Kowcher.  Then, when the first set appears in the library, the title of the movie will appear. Our working title at the moment is Lost Causes.   After all the major titles, the font will start to appear on screen slower as it starts introducing further information such as music. The music will be from samples and/or our group members will make custom music through the use of a digital audio workstation as they have experience in making music. The title for editors will pop up on one of the computers that are occupied at the library (if available), displaying the names ‘Madelyn Can

Title Design Research: Teen Spirit (Musical Drama)

Image
  1. How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences of the film? Which ones?   There are 18 titles. They are the actors, writer, director, producer, executive producers, co-producer, director of photography, production designer, costume designer, editor, composer/person who did music, music co-producer, music supervisor, choreographers, visual effects, visual effects supervisor, make-up and hair designer, and the caster. 2. What connotations do the images carry? (How do they make you feel?)  The beginning images seem mysterious as someone's figure is being shown in shadows. This made me curious as I did not know what was going to happen next. However, as the intro keeps going it becomes a little overwhelming. As a lot of people are talking over each other in different languages and the titles go by faster. Not only this, but the intro shows the main character in a public setting with a bunch of people trying to talk to her and take photos of her. By the end of the intro

Title Design Research: Crazy Rich Asians (Romance/Drama)

Image
My group and I needed to find out ways to do the title design. To do this, we researched/looked at some title sequences from various movies. The first title sequence we looked at is the title sequence from Crazy Rich Asians.   1. How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences of the film? Which ones?    There are four titles. The titles are the movie name and the companies that co-produced the movie.  2. What connotations do the images carry? (how do they make you feel) The images are very colorful and change with each new title that is presented on the screen. This makes me feel happy and excited to see the rest of the movie/film.  3. How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical codes from the outset? (Can you tell what genre the film is)   Although it is a little hard to see what the genre is, the movie still uses some symbolic codes that correspond with the genre. Such as using bright colors and upbeat music. This is a romantic comedy and is supposed to be more

Title Design Research: Underwater (Horror)

Image
  1. How many titles are displayed during the opening sequences of the film? Which ones?  In this title sequence, fifteen titles were displayed. They include companies that worked together to produce this film, title, list of actors who were in the film, and who cast them, music producer, visual effects supervisor, editors, production designer, director of photography, executive producer, other producers, story maker, screenplay maker, and directors. 2. What connotations do the images carry? (how do they make you feel)  The images within this title sequence gave off dark and mysterious connotations. They give us an ominous feeling with the quick transitions to specific words that appear to be from articles. It would highlight words such as “high risk,” “Deepwater Mystery,” “Rumors of strange sightings…”, etc. These gave heavy mystery and horror connotations especially when linked with the images displayed alongside the text.   3. How is genre reinforced through symbolic and technical

Title Design Research: Succession (Historical/Comedy)

Image
There are 11 titles that are displayed during the opening sequences of the film. Those titles were the actors, casting director, production designer, the editor, director of photography, music director, the producer, executive producer, the creator, the screenwriter, and who directed the film.  The connotation the images carried, was historic and then modern. The opening sequence went back and forward between, the past and present which made me feel, that the film was going to do with the past and present.  The genre was reinforced through symbolic and technical codes. The genre was historical because it showed images from what looked like the 90s. It also showed people from the past then showed them in the present, but they were older.  Some conventions that were used to ensure it hit its target audience was the song, the song wasn't too upbeat that it would draw in younger folks, but it wasn't too slow that it would draw the attention of older folks. So, I think the target au

Title Website Research

Image
www.artofthetitle.com Before any planning can be initiated, my group and I are in need of more information regarding opening sequences. Through further discussion, we were able to come across two useful websites. Art of the Title is one of the main ones that we explored and were able to spend some time getting used to the new site. When scrolling on the homepage of the site, we can see several different options all ranging from title designs, movie reports, title sequences, etc. With a closer look, we noticed how they were lined up left to right by date, latest to oldest released. Then, we left the homepage by clicking on the link to title sequences, which then led us to a display of a collage of different movie title covers. On the left, there is a side-bar labeled Feature , which includes details such as the style and date. Scrolling further, we saw a list of the top ten title sequences of 2020 listed in ascending order. All of the listed sequences were a video clip that would ra

Genre Research: Cinderella The Amazon Original

Image
Hello, today we are researching Fantasy Movies so we have a better idea of what our opening sequence will look like. The first movie we are researching is Cinderella, made by Amazon.  The common sounds that we found in cinderella, was dialogue, and diegetic sound, along with singing. We did notice that in most fantasy moves it opens with some kind of narration, like a storybook. In this movie it did it as well, it also broke into sound and dance within the first 15 to 25 seconds in.  One of the common camera angles was a bird's eye view, so the audience could see the different movements the actors were doing as they danced. Another common camera angle was the medium shot, this was often used if the character was sitting, or if the character was eating, basically something that didn't require that much movement. The last common camera angle is Wide shot when a character was walking or opening a door, or talking to another character.  In this movie, the characters wore things

Genre Research: A Wrinkle in Time

Image
To better understand the genre of fantasy as a whole my group and I are researching certain movies that fall under the fantasy genre. By doing this we hope to be able to better understand what to do for our intro/final.       One common camera angle used was a close-up. This is used numerous times to show people's faces. This is to show the emotions on the characters' faces and for the audience to see their faces more clearly. Another camera angle used commonly is an establishing shot. This is used to show the audience where the scene is taking place.       Diegetic and non-diegetic sounds are both used a lot in this movie. Diegetic sound is used mainly for dialogue and to provide any background noise such as birds chirping. Non-diegetic sound is mainly used for the music over a shot. Music is put over certain sections of the film to help convey the particular feeling of that part of the movie.       There was a lot of editing in this movie. Since the majority of this movie i

Genre Research: Jumanji: The Next Level

Image
For further research on movies under the fantasy genre, one of the three movies we chose was Jumanji: The Next Level .  Some common camera angles, movements, and shots that were used in this movie were that they started off their sequence by zooming out to display the company name and logo. They also started the film with a wide shot to display where the first setting will take place before zooming out to show a character. this was followed by a series of zoom-ins in different settings in which every other character was introduced before the story progressed. Tracking shots were also used when characters were in a hurry and had to move quickly before anything bad happens and panning was also used for when one of the characters had fallen from a plane and rolled to a stop at a desert. A zoom-out movement was then used to show the setting followed through with a close-up on the people's faces to show their reactions to the unnatural world. Common lighting, acting, makeup, props, an

Genre Decision

Image
Hello, today we are finally deciding on our genre. Yay, we are so excited. First, we conducted research on viable genres that we could use for this opening sequence. This was a really hard decision as we were really interested in all three genres. In the end, however, we’ve decided on making our final task a fantasy genre. This genre is basically the one where supernatural concepts such as mind-controlling and aliens. The costumes and makeup are made to look like they are different from what is usually worn on Earth.  We came to this decision because after discussion and deliberation we’ve learned that some concepts in fantasy movies are also incorporated in fantasy movies. Also, we could better incorporate and express Fantasy than we could Sci-Fi. We also wanted to challenge ourselves a little. However, we wanted to make sure that the task at hand was not impossible. Thriller, on the other hand, is a bit much for our storyline. It would be harder to visualize and make a thriller, but

Genre Research: Thriller

Image
One genre that my group was interested in was thriller. My group and I found thriller an interesting genre to do because there are endless ways to use the genre to our advantage and to interest the audience.  Some common camera angles used for thrillers are close-ups and low angle shots. Close-ups are used to show the emotions on someone's face. Usually their faces are scared. This helps to engage the audience as they anticipate seeing what is making the characters fearful. A low angle shot is mainly used to show someone is above someone/or something else. Such as being in an authoritative role.  A common editing technique used in thrillers is using jump cuts. Usually to interrupt a scene in order to break up the scene and to make the audience feel weird about the abrupt change. Another technique used is to cut certain parts of a scene out of the final product. This is to keep the audience interested as the scene is very high paced and usually/sometimes action packed. The parts tha

Genre Research: Fantasy

Image
Fantasy is one of the three genres that appeal to us for a variety of reasons. Not only does it give us a unique perspective of a different world, but the way it can be developed is vastly interesting.  Common camera angles, movements, and shots that are common in many fantasy movies are wide-angle and crane shots (also known as the bird's-eye-view). Wide shots and bird's-eye-view shots give a clear perspective to the setting being used in the film. Movements such as panning or tracking are also used when giving a sense of perspective of fantasy characters as well. Common Mis-en-scenes within fantasy movies include various types of lighting. Lighting usually sets the mood of a scene which can be incorporated as such: harsh lighting with a strong contrast gives a clear depiction between good and evil, soft lighting gives a warm and pleasant feeling, and shadows display discomfort or tension-inducing scenes. Colors are also something utilized in this genre. For example, The Lord

Genre Research: Sci-Fi

Image
Hello, Today we are researching, the genre for our movie. One of the genres we are considering is SciFi.  When researching we noticed that in Sci-Fi movies, some common camera angles are Extreme long shots to show something extremely big like a spaceship or something. Birds Eyeshot to show the roads and buildings. A close-up to show that the characters have very intense emotions, and for small things like small space rock, to look big. One last Camera Angel we noticed is a high-angle shot which is typical to show one character is powerless and vulnerable.  We also noticed that in sci-Fi movies, is that they typically wear something that reflects what life is in that world is like, If they are in a middle of a battle they wear armor, if they are royals they are dressed in prim and proper.  Most sci-fi films use sci-fi make up which is called SFX. They give the actors abnormal features, wounds, animal features, that you wouldn't see normally. They can also use makeup as a type of gre

Our Pitch

Image
Pitch one: Three people find an object each with their names on it, guiding them to their fate and newfound powers.  Pitch two: A worker opens an email ruining their day and potentially their life.  Pitch one reason: This idea interests us because the concept would be detailed and enjoyable to do. Fantasy is a genre that excites all of us and being incorporated into a story of our own would be interesting. It's also an interesting film because Tasmia wrote a short story about it. We would just have to change some of the powers for editing purposes. However, it would be timely, and editing the powers to look realistic may be difficult for us. Pitch two reason:  This idea interests us, because of the open possibilities. Mystery, Suspense, and origin stories are some of our favorite topics to discuss. It would also be interesting to film because we came up with this idea by joking that Madelyn looked like a villain. So, if we were to actually make this it would be hilarious. However t
